UIUC model configurations
The UIUC regional ensemble consists of models run with the following configurations
(updated Aug. 17, 2004):
- General: MM5: version 3-6-1; multi-physics, multi-resolution.
- Data: all initialized with the NCEP Eta 212 grids
(MM5g (GFS) and MM5h (RUC) planned)
- 12-km runs:
- Domains: two, 125x103 and 118x112.
- Grid spacing: 36/12-km horizontal, 23 half-sigma layers.
- Physics: Simple ice (Dudhia), multi-layer soil model, shallow convection, and
the following combinations:
- MM5a: Blackadar PBL, Grell cumulus parameterization
- MM5b: Blackadar PBL, Kain-Fritsch CUPA
- MM5c: Eta-Mellor-Yamada PBL, Grell CUPA
- MM5d: Eta-Mellor-Yamada PBL, Kain-Fritsch CUPA
- 24-km runs:
- Domains: two, 70x49 and 70x64.
- Grid spacing: 72/24-km horizontal, 23 half-sigma layers.
- Physics: Same as above, with following combinations:
- MM5e: Eta-Mellor-Yamada PBL, Grell CUPA
- MM5f: Eta-Mellor-Yamada PBL, Kain-Fritsch CUPA
- MM5g: Eta-Mellor-Yamada PBL, Kain-Fritsch CUPA, GFS data planned
- MM5h: Eta-Mellor-Yamada PBL, Kain-Fritsch CUPA, RUC data planned

- General: multi-analysis, using either the Eta 212 or GFS analyses
- Domains: one, 107x179
- Grid spacing: approx. 12 km horizontal, 38 levels

- Temporarily discontinued for research WRF runs on the
same Linux PC.
- General: multi-analysis, multi-resolution and multi-physics
- Version 1.3, mass dynamical core, 3rd-order Runge-Kutta:
- Initialization: Eta 212 data
- Domains and grid spacing: one grid, 66x64 (24-km); 31 levels.
- Physics, for run WRF-a:
NCEP 3-class microphysics, Dudhia SW radiation,
MRF PBL, KF cumulus parameterization, thermal diffusion
- Version 2.0.2, Advanced Research WRF (ARW) dynamical core, mass coordinate
- Initialization: Eta 212, GFS, or RUC (Eta BC) data
- Domain: 66x64 (24 km; 12-km runs planned after assessment of
24-km results); 31 levels.
- Physics: all use
RRTM longwave radiation, Dudhia shortwave, 10 mins between radiation calls,
boundary layer physics called every step, cloud effects on radiation,
WRFSI landuse/soil data, 100s time step, 3rd-order Runge-Kutta time integration,
no turbulence or explicit filters, no W damping (at present), no upper-level damping,
smdiv=0.1, emdiv=0.01 (both of these parameters were tested at zero without much
sensitivity noted), epssm=0.1, 4 sound steps per large step.
Specific configurations:
- WRF-b, Lin/KF/Eta: Lin µphys, Kain-Fritsch CUPA, Janjic Eta surface-layer,
RUC land surface model (LSM), Mellor-Yamada-Janjic (Eta) PBL
- WRF-c, Lin/KF/Noah: as in WRF-b, but with Monin-Obukhov surface-layer, Noah LSM,
YSU PBL.
- WRF-d, Lin/GR/Noah: as in WRF-c, but with Grell-Devenyi ensemble cumulus scheme.
- WRF-e, Wsm5/GR/Noah: as in WRF-d, but with WSM 5-class ice scheme.
- WRF-f: same as WRF-d, but with RUC IC/Eta BC data. (planned)
- WRF-g: same as WRF-d, but with GFS IC/BC data.
